"...this is an heirloom cookbook. I feel strongly that my grandmother lives on through her recipes." Sara Moulton, cooks at home

Think about a great family gift for this year's holidays. If you start now you will be able to complete your family memory cookbook in ample time. Get the entire family involved or just do it all yourself. Staying organized will help you have more fun as you complete your soon to be heirloom.

Ten Things To Do Before Starting Your Family Cookbook
Great if you are doing it as a family...

1.        Family meeting: invite as many family members as can to attend. It can be in person if many of you live in the same place. If not, do a phone conference. You may want to try it with cell phones for those of you who have speaker phones on their cell phones. Each  cell phone can be dialed to another family member. If many of you live out of town, check on free tele-conferencing like www.freeconference.com/  and have everyone dial in for the meeting.  You will all be charged on your own long distance carrier for the call.

2.       Have one family member be moderator. You need someone to manage your time on the call. Have a list of agenda items to be done while you are on the call.

3.      Let members at the meeting tell you what they do well.  Some might be more creative, have more organizational skills, have computer skills or some may just have more access to the older family members.

4.      Find out who wants to help. See who has the most time and least amount of time to work on your cookbook.

5.       The more people that get involved with the cookbook project will make the work easier. The more the merrier and find a task for everyone who wants to work on it.

6.       If you are planning to use the cookbook for a fund raiser, while you are still on your first conference call the best time to decide where the money raised will be going. Later use the fund as a way to get family members excited about the project.

7.       Set realistic goals for selling your cookbook as a fund raiser.  The number of relatives and number of outside sales that you think may happen will help you to set a budget for creating your cookbook. Remember to charge for postage!
